Form
Owen Coyle was criticised in many quarters for jumping ship from fellow relegation strugglers Burnley last season, although Bolton’s subsequent survival vindicated his controversial decision. Bolton had a tough time last season, and are expected to struggle again this term, although the addition of Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov gives fans some cause for optimism.
Star Players
The evergreen Kevin Davies, with his immense work rate and strong aerial abilities, should continue to give the Premier League’s weaker defences a torrid time this season. Recent addition Martin Petrov from Manchester City will have a point to prove to his old club, and he can expect a lot more opportunities to show what he is capable of this time round. At the back, the highly regarded Gary Cahill is beginning to look like a serious contender for a starting berth in England’s back four, and the widely respected Jussi Jaaskelainen continues to be a commanding presence between the sticks.
The Gaffer
In Owen Coyle, Bolton have one of the most highly regarded young managers in the English game.
His motivational skills were key to Burnley’s ascent into the Premier League, and their subsequent collapse after his departure only goes to show the difference that he can make to a team. The affable, tee-total Coyle will be looking to work some of the same magic at Bolton, and if he can keep them clear of relegation this term, a bigger job surely awaits.
The Outlook
Bolton have one of the weakest squads in the Premiership, and only narrowly avoided relegation last time round. Although they have made some improvements to the team, the Premier League looks a lot stronger this term, and they may struggle to steer clear of the bottom three. However, they seem to have plenty of team spirit, and with a bit of luck they could end up challenging for a mid table position come the end of the season.
