Form
Everton have consistently punched above their weight in recent seasons, with a transfer budget and wage bill that is much lower than most of their competitors for a Europa League slot. Much of the credit for this is due to their manager, David Moyes, whose shrewd transfer dealings, tactical awareness, and motivational skills are the envy of many a Premier League chairman. An impressive run of form in the second half of last season saw them fall just short of a Europa League place, and Moyes will be hoping that his team can carry on that run into the new season. The squad has seen only modest additions over the summer, as is the case at many recession-hit clubs, but Everton seem better placed to ride out the storm than most.
Star Players
The recent clamour for Mikel Arteta to play for England shows just how highly rated this skilful Spanish midfielder is in his adopted country. However, Everton have quality all over the park, with the reliable Tim Howard in goal, the talismanic Phil Jagielka in defence, the excellent Marouane Fellaini in midfield, and former Man Utd hitman Louis Saha up front.
The loan signing of the USA's Landon Donovan was an inspired move last season, and one of the catalysts for their return to form in the second half of the season. Attempts to sign him on a permanent deal were ultimately fruitless, however, and his absence may be keenly felt. New signing Jermaine Beckford from Leeds certainly made an impression in the FA Cup last season, and can be expected to add firepower to the Toffees' attack. Another new signing, 20 year old French striker Magaye Gueye, has been hugely impressive in the pre-season and is expected to challenge Louis Saha and Jermaine Beckford for a starting berth up front.
The Gaffer
David Moyes is one of the most respected managers in the Premier League, having coaxed consistently good performances out of a relatively inexpensively assembled team. However, it is unlikely that he will ever have the budget to compete for a top four spot again with Everton, and he could be forgiven for thinking that he has taken the club as far as he can. If he can pull off another miracle this term, it will not be long before a bigger club comes knocking at his door.
The Outlook
With all of their key players fit and in form, Everton are a formidable side that could be expected to finish in the top ten again this term. However, a few injuries to some of their top players could leave them looking decidedly under-strength. If they can keep up the form of last season, and have a little luck with injuries, then Everton could be duking it out with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Aston Villa for a Europa League spot come the end of the season.
