QUICK LINKS

Form
City narrowly missed out on the coveted fourth Champions League qualifying place to Spurs last season, a disappointment they’ve addressed with a summer of no holds barred retail therapy.
The fact that Manchester’s ‘other team’ - traditionally a somewhat hapless but entertaining bunch of likable underdogs – are now the richest club in the world by some distance is still slightly hard to believe. Like Del Boy and Rodders actually becoming millionaires. It just doesn't feel right. After a summer of liberally dipping into what appears to be a bottomless pit of money however, the possibility that Man City are poised for financially fuelled domination is undoubtedly very real.
Star Players
We’re a long way from the days of Sean Goater, now Roberto Mancini picks from a selection of vastly wealthy world superstars and even top quality internationals like Bellamy and Ireland are shunned in favour of a conveyor belt of big money signings lured by City’s ‘ambition’.
Of this summer’s additions (there are no doubt more to come) David Silva is perhaps the most exciting. The miniscule Spanish midfielder may not have got much game time at the World Cup but perfectly embodies the modern breed of Spanish ‘tiki taka’ player -  he’s small, fast, tricky and adaptable. The big question is how well (and quickly) the ex Valencia man can acclimatise to the rugged demands of the Premier League.
The Gaffer
Scarf loving silver fox Roberto Mancini is the personal shopper charged with the job of spending City’s billions and, as many a Supermarket Sweep contestant will vouch, such a frantic and fiscally unencumbered approach to shopping will probably see some tat mistakenly tossed into the trolley.
Mancini’s big challenge will surely be crafting the products of his shopping spree into a proper team and, to be fair, he’s proved himself to be a disciplined and intelligent tactician in the past.
The Outlook
Everything depends on how well and quickly Mancini can corral a sprawling squad composed largely of newcomers to the English game into a cohesive unit. Even if he doesn’t, City surely have enough talent at their disposal to score a lot of goals and win a lot of games but risk a similar fate to last season.
Mancini arguably now has at his disposal the finest squad in the Premier League (on paper at least) and the prospect of Tevez, Adebayor, Silva, Balotelli, Toure, Johnson plus the option of Robinho and the soon to arrive Milner is pretty mouth watering. Quite how such an array of egos can be kept happy and harmonious is another question.  A lack of continuity and balance may be what prevents Nouveau Riche City from getting everything they want this season but they should certainly edge a bit closer to being genuine Premier League contenders.
